Balance between Sustainability and Tourism

El-Machu-Picchu
“Machu Picchu in Peru is swamped with tourism, which affects the sites and can negatively impact the quality of life for local communities as well” says Stefaan Poortman, executive director of the Global Heritage Fund. 😉

Travel and Tourism industry generate around 10% of global GDP annually, which has a great impact over economy. On the other hand, the industry has also considerable negative cultural and environmental impacts on the natural and historical attractions.  Precious tourist attractions are on the brink of collapse, such as the Great Wall of China, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Tutankhamen’s Tomb in Egypt etc. We need to figure out how to keep the balance between the sustainability of the attraction sites and the flourishing tourism economy, which is also about keeping the planet for our future generation.
